Town prepares for paving season

Along with the aroma of freshly mowed grass will come that of freshly poured asphalt, as the paving season is set to begin in early June.

One of the bigger projects this season is the hill section of West Milton Road, which was patched last year, town engineer Andy Legg said. The town waited until this spring to let the road settle after a long winter, he said.

“It’s still in rough shape,” Legg said, adding that the town erected a ‘Rough Road’ sign there. “People, I think, understand we’re now out there trying to fix it up.”

Legg said the paver, S.D. Ireland, will work on some residential roads this year, including Circle, Oglewood, Sonya, Sheldon, Smith and a portion of Hardscrabble Road; Pep and Elmer place, June and Sally way and Delma, Quail Hollow and Thrush drives.

“We’ll have our signs out there when we go into residential neighborhoods,”
Legg said, adding that people will likely get a day’s notice.

The projects total nearly $400,000, with some funds carried over from the fiscal year 2010 budget. The West Milton Road project is funded with the remaining dollars from the voter-approved $250,000 bond on Town Meeting Day in March 2010.

Although travel may be down to one lane at times, Legg said he doesn’t expect any full road closures due to road construction.
