Button is Lake Division Coach of the Year

By ZENDA FARREL | Milton Independent Sports Writer

Glenn Button was recently named Lake Division Coach of the Year for his steadfast commitment to the Yellowjackets varsity soccer team. Since Button took over as head coach, the Jackets have had one stellar season after another and this year was no different. The team ended 15-2 after a 2-1 OT loss to Mill River in the semifinals.

Button says modestly, “A coach is only as good as his players and I was blessed to have a great group of guys who really bought into what I was trying to teach.”

The Yellowjackets were big winners in Lake Division soccer this year with 8 players receiving recognition for their outstanding performances on the field.

Lake Division First Team All Stars

Tim Gingras
Tommy Gingras
Mike Thompson
Corey Hurley
Mike Rice
Zack Rose
Drew Steady

Dylan Jasinski

Senior defender Tim Gingras

Button: “Timmy is one of the toughest and most competitive players I have ever coached.” “He is a 4-year varsity starter and one of the best backs in the state of Vermont. He was a great vocal leader and gave us a presence in the back that every other team feared. Since the start of his sophomore year we have had a record of 42-6-3 and he is a huge part of that success. I would dare say he is going to be one of the toughest players we have ever had to replace.”

Tim also earned All-Star All-State, VSCA, Senior Classic All-Star recognition and was named MVP for Milton High School.

Junior forward and tri-captain Tommy Gingras

Button: “Tommy led the Lake Division in scoring with 13 goals and 3 assists.
He is a very skilled forward with one of the best work ethics I have ever seen. He can finish anywhere in the attacking third and is not afraid to take chances.”

To his trophy case Tommy also adds All-Star and All-State honors and the MHS Team Coaches Award.

Senior defender Mike Thompson

Button: “Mike played the stopper position for us this year. He is a big, strong, hardworking player who was lethal in the air and was always in the right position.”

Junior midfielder Corey Hurley

Button: “Corey was our starting attacking central midfielder this year. He was second on the team with 8 goals and 3 assists. Corey is a smart, skilled player who is always in the right position and can finish anywhere in the attacking third of the field.”

Lake Division Second Team All Stars

Junior midfielder and tri-captain Mike Rice

Button: “Mike is a 3 year varsity player and had a great year in the midfield. He scored 3 goals and had 5 assists on the season. Most of the assists were on perfect corner kick serves. Mike is one of the fittest players on the team and was always a dangerous option coming out midfield.”

Senior defender Zack Rose

Button: “Zack is a 4-year varsity player. We shifted him into a defensive midfield role this year because of his speed and good field vision. Zack was also a player we called on to mark the top strikers on the opposing team.”

Sophomore midfielder Drew Steady

Button: “Drew really stepped up his play this season. He played mostly on the outside midfield which is a position we demand a lot from. He is a quick, hardworking player who posses great game instincts. Drew was also a big scoring threat for us. He finished the year with 5 goals and 5 assists.”

Lake Division Honorable Mention

Junior goaltender Dylan Jasinski

Button: “In his first season as a varsity starter, Dylan exceeded my expectations. He became a vocal leader and was better at coming out in traffic as the season progressed. He covers the goal well and made some terrific saves this year. He finished the season with 9 shutouts and only allowed 12 goals in 17 games.”

Dylan received the award for Milton’s Most Improved Player.
