MHS graduate Kyle McRae was recently the inaugural recipient of the Joseph J Handy Memorial Scholarhip, a $500 award made available to offset player fees for the summer season, given in the memory of Joseph J Handy, a lifetime baseball fan who passed away suddenly on March 11, 2009.

Kyle, whose career began with T-ball in Milton, was a 4 year varsity player, moving up from junior varsity for the playoffs in his freshman season. He also played for the Colchester Cannons for three seasons, 2009 will be his fourth.

In addition to winning the Handy Scholarship, Kyle earned All Metro Honorable Mention in 2008 and was named to the All Metro Second Team in 2009. He was also nominated to try out for the North/South team as a senior.

“I was just really happy to play with the Yellowjackets, we had such a great varsity team,” said Kyle.

Kyle will be attending Castleton State College in the fall of 2009 where he will major in Criminal Justice. He was also selected for advanced training with the Military Police and plans to leave for Fort Levenworth, TX for basic training on Jan 5, 2010. When he returns from basic training, he will be stationed in Northfield, VT and he intends to complete his degree at Castleton.

Colchester Cannon's coach, Jeff Mongeon says, “I am very proud of Kyle for following his dreams.  Every since I've known him he has wanted to be great baseball player and eventually join the military.  It is a rare person who knows what they want and instead of dreaming about it goes out and gets it. Kyle has worked hard and waited his turn to step into a Senior Cannons starting role.  He has played behind some really good players the last couple years and now it's his turn to step up. He is one of those players you never worry about.  He is always working hard and does his very best on the field not to mention doing his very best to give comedic relief in the dugout.  He brings a lot to the table as far as team chemistry."
